BioControl Secondary Screening Assay for Top STEC Receives AOAC Approval
Bellevue, WA – Oct 23, 2015 – BioControl Systems, Inc., a global leader in food safety testing, has received AOAC Research Institute Performance Tested Method (PTM) approval [Certificate 101502] for Assurance GDS® MPX ID for Top STEC (MPX ID), a secondary screening assay that provides “Top 6” Shiga Toxin-producing strains of E. coli (STEC) results confirmed for release in as little as 2 hours. Additionally, Assurance GDS MPX ID can be used to confirm isolated colonies from samples presumptive positive for Top 6 STEC.
The Assurance GDS MPX method (MPX Top 6 or 7 followed by MPX ID) provides actionable results in 14 hours from start to finish, as opposed to the 5 days required for conventional cultural methods. “Top STEC testing continues to be a challenge for food laboratories, says Lyssa Sakaley, Product Manager at BioControl. “We are excited to offer a family of field-tested and AOAC-approved STEC assays customers can choose from to meet their STEC testing needs. As the newest member, Assurance MPX ID dramatically lowers false positives, an evolutionary leap forward, saving labs time and lowering cultural confirmation costs,” explains Sakaley.
The Assurance GDS MPX method combines a proprietary PickPen® immunomagnetic-based (IMS) sample preparation procedure specifically targeting the Top 6 or 7 O serogroups (O26, O45, O103, O111, O121, O145 and O157) followed by PCR analysis for the detection of the eae and stx1 and stx2 genes. This approach satisfies the USDA criteria for detection of STEC and minimizes the potential for false positives caused by a combination of multiple organisms rather than a single organism containing all of the necessary markers. MPX ID further eliminates this issue by targeting unique eae gene sequences which are highly correlated to the specific 6 O groups comprising non-O157 Top STEC. Designed to be run after the Assurance GDS MPX Top 6 or 7 STEC screening assays, MPX ID identifies the specific O serogroup(s) responsible for the positive result and verifies that all targets relevant to the definition of a Top 6 STEC (eae, stx and O group) are present within a single organism.
The Assurance GDS pathogen detection system includes assays for Non-O157 Top STEC, E. coli O157:H7, E. coli O104, Shiga Toxin Genes, Salmonella, Listeria spp., Listeria monocytogenes, Cronobacter, and 2 IMS kits to aide in the isolation and confirmation of Top STEC serogroups (Poly IMS and IMS Panel).
